ARTS PDF Variform Plus FAQs

1. I have successfully installed ARTS PDF Variform Plus on my computer. However, when I attempt to access it from within Acrobat®, the menu options are disabled. How do I open the application?

To use ARTS PDF Variform Plus, you need to open a PDF form in Acrobat® (Unfortunately, ARTS PDF Variform Plus is not compatible with XFA forms created in Adobe® Designer). Once a PDF document with form fields is open, the ARTS PDF Variform Plus menu items will become enabled.

2. Can ARTS PDF Variform Plus be used to merge PDF forms and data files programmatically?

Yes, ARTS PDF Variform Plus contains a built-in IAC, which allows for programmatic control. The IAC Reference and sample application are included with the installer. After successful installation, these guides can be found in the following directory, C:\Program Files\ARTS PDF Variform Plus\Variform PDF Pro IAC.

3. When attempting to merge my files, I receive an error message stating that 'no fields in the data source match the PDF form fields'. How do I rectify the problem?

Ensure that you have the correct delimited file, delimiter and qualifier selected within your settings (Tools > ARTS PDF Variform Plus > ARTS PDF Variform Plus). Verify that your fields have been correctly mapped. Uncheck the 'auto-map fields' option, click on 'map fields' and manually match your form fields and delimited file fields.

4. How do I merge variable images with my PDF forms?

ARTS PDF Variform Plus can merge variable images using any image file format supported by Acrobat®. Images can only be merged to a properly created button form field. When creating a data file, the complete path to the image file(s) must be included (i.e. C:\MyImages\ImageOne.tif).

  1. Create a button field. On the 'options' panel, choose 'icon only' for its properties or one of the other icon options. Do not choose an icon - leave the button blank.
  2. In your data file, there must be a column heading with the exact same name as the button field. For example, 'Button1'.
  3. Under the column heading 'Button1' in your data file, enter the full path to the image you want to merge. For example: C:\MyImages\ImageOne.tif.

5. How do I connect ARTS PDF Variform Plus to my database?

ARTS PDF Variform Plus supports connection to any registered ODBC data source. Simply select 'use database' then click 'setup' in the main ARTS PDF Variform Plus window. A 'select database query' window will open. Click 'connect' to go to 'select data source' and choose your data source from the list available (file or machine data source). Or alternatively, hit 'new' and create a new connection (Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Data Sources (ODBC)) by following the prompts.

7. I am having a problem with ARTS PDF Variform Plus and it is not covered in this list of FAQs. What can I do?
